Binge Eating Disorder is actually the most common eating disorder, diagnosed in about 3.5% of adult women. BED is also one of the most misunderstood eating disorders. With the DSM 5 only just officially separating BED out as its own diagnosis and the current lack of knowledge by medical professionals, BED patients often face tremendous shame when seeking help. In this introductory presentation, we will discuss BED diagnostic criteria, understand how shame plays a role in seeking help and following through with treatment, and also discuss the two main approaches to treating BED.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a greater understanding of Binge Eating Disorder, including diagnosis criteria and statistics
  • Understand social pressures and implications (including how shame plays a critical role in BED) for treatment of BED
  • Be able to apply a "Healthy at Every Size" and "Intuitive Eating" model to the treatment of BED
